Habitat and development. Exploring paths of educational innovation in architecture and urbanism

Habitat and development. Exploring paths of educational innovation in architecture and urbanism. It has been two decades since the first subjects that incorporated basic habitability or development cooperation appeared in the training of the architect in Spain. Since then the schools of architecture have been incorporating content that is increasingly demanded by both society and students themselves. The economic crisis initiated in 2008 or the Sustainable Development Objectives approved in 2015 by the United Nations should make us reflect on the centrality of these issues in the formation of architecture and urbanism. Since the year of its creation, in 2001, the optional Habitat and Development has been proposed to make visible the social architecture as an important part in the architect’s training, in which the architectural process is prioritized, closely related to the habitat (the inhabitant, the habits and their relation to the place), in front of the product (the object, the building, as a formal synthesis of that architecture). The subject makes a reading of the role that development cooperation can play in the training of the architect. Citizen participation is another of the cross-cutting themes that are incorporated into the subject by training students in techniques specifically applicable to the field of architecture and urbanism. Habitat and development is taught in the first semester of fifth year of the degree in architecture of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

A service-oriented architecture for scientific computing on cloud infrastructures

This paper describes a service-oriented architecture that eases the process of scientific application deployment and execution in IaaS Clouds, with a focus on High Throughput Computing applications. The system integrates i) a catalogue and repository of Virtual Machine Images, ii) an application deployment and configuration tool, iii) a meta-scheduler for job execution management and monitoring. The developed system significantly reduces the time required to port a scientific application to these computational environments. This is exemplified by a case study with a computationally intensive protein design application on both a private Cloud and a hybrid three-level infrastructure (Grid, private and public Cloud). The authors wish to thank the financial support received from the Generalitat Valenciana for the project GV/2012/076 and to the Ministerio de Econom´ıa y Competitividad for the project CodeCloud (TIN2010-17804)Moltó, G.; Calatrava Arroyo, A.; Hernández García, V. El auge del turismo urbano está provocando una serie de efectos no deseados en las ciudades, donde predomina una visión de esta como mercancía. Urban tourism boom is causing a series of unwanted effects on neighborhoods. According to Lefebvre, the city is increasingly seen as a commodity. In this context, new urban movements opposing this vision and its consequences are emerging. They pose a counterhegemonic discourse, use new digital tools and the practice ciberactivism

In this paper we analyse the population height of a Castilian town, Zamora, in the long term in order to estimate the evolution of standard of living. Our aim is to prove that the agrarian capitalism a economic development strategy provoked and improvement of the standard of living smaller that the industrialization. On the other hand, we reveal the existence of an "urban penalty" in Castile. Rural inhabitants' standard of living, were higher than those calculated for the urban population, at least, until the beginnings of the 20 century

Changes resulting from the publishing process, such as peer review, editing, corrections, structural formatting, and other quality control mechanisms may not be reflected in this document. Changes may have been made to this work since it was submitted for publication. A definitive version was subsequently published in Journal of Supercritical Fluids, 55 (2011). http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.supflu.2010.09.030Rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) extracts were obtained in a supercritical pilot-scale plant. Based on experimental information available in the literature for analytical or low-scale processes, extraction temperature and pressure were selected to be 313 K and 30 MPa. At these extraction conditions, the kinetic behavior of the pilot-scale overall extraction curve were determined with respect to yield, antioxidant activity and carnosic acid content. The overall extraction curve was represented using Sovova’s model; the average deviation between measured and calculated yields was lower than 2%. Mass transfer coefficients in the fluid and solid phases were determined and were compared with previous data reported in the literature for low-scale rosemary supercritical extraction. A two-stage depressurization procedure was accomplished and the effect of both on-line fractionation and extraction time on the antioxidant activity of the samples collected was studied. The antioxidant activity of the different fractions could be straight correlated with the carnosic acid content with a regression coefficient of 0.92This work has been financed by Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and Comunidad Autónoma de Madrid (ALIBIRD-S2009/AGR-1469) and project FUN-C-FOOD, CSD2007-00063 (CONSOLIDER-INGENIO) from Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación, Spain

A Parallel Implementation of the K Nearest Neighbours Classifier in Three Levels: Threads MPI Processes and the Grid

The work described in this paper tackles the problem of data mining and classification of large amounts of data using the K nearest neighbours classifier (KNN) [1]. The large computing demand of this process is solved with a parallel computing implementation specially designed to work in Grid environments of multiprocessor computer farms. The different parallel computing approaches (intra-node, inter-node and inter-organisations) are not sufficient by themselves to face the computing demand of such a big problem. Instead of using parallel techniques separately, we propose to combine the three of them considering the parallelism grain of the different parts of the problem. The main purpose is to complete a 1 month-CPU job in a few hours. The technologies that are being used are the EGEE Grid Computing Infrastructure running the Large Hadron Collider Computing Grid (LCG 2.6) middleware [3], MPI [4] [5] and POSIX [6] threads. Finally, we compare the results obtained with the most popular and used tools to understand the importance of this strategy.Aparicio Pla, G.; Blanquer Espert, I.; Hernández García, V. (2007).
